Ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to join you here on the eve of a significant date in the calendar of this great city.
Seventy years ago the tranquility of Darwin was rocked.
The unthinkable was happening: our country was under enemy attack.
The events of the 19th of February 1942 have not been well known or understood by the broader Australian community.
Certainly the scale and human toll of the war in the Territory did not fill a large part of our history books.
As we gather together this weekend we can all take time to reflect.
To commemorate those whose lives were lost – or shattered.
Homes and families uprooted in the chaos of that day - and the following eighteen months.
They were long, bitter, and sustained times for the people of our North.
Chief Minister, I congratulate the Northern Territory Government on opening the pages of that time.
On your tangible commitment to honouring the memory of all those who died or suffered in the name of Australia.
The 19th of February 1942 is integral to our ongoing story as a nation.
We fought for our freedom with courage, grit and determination.
This anniversary allows us to remember those who helped shape our future as a strong and self-reliant nation, actively involved in world affairs.
I also salute the dedication of Frontline Australia.
The program of community events that you have co-ordinated will give everyone reason to pause and think deeply about this chapter of our history.
I am proud to be a Frontline Ambassador.
My friends, the Defence of Darwin Experience will open our eyes to the significance of the Territory in our war history.
The main focus will be the Bombing of 1942, but visitors will also learn of the strategic role Darwin played during the period from 1932 to 1945.
More and more Australians will understand the importance of this city in our military defences of World War II.
The Northern Territory has a rich history and heritage.
It is a timeless part of Australia that continues to attract national and international visitors.
The Defence of Darwin Experience will be a wonderful magnet for those people – as well as locals.
A place to exchange stories and fire the imagination.
To add new family tales and memories to the record.
I thank the Chief Minister for inviting me to join in this weekend’s commemoration program.
I am honoured to be a part of this very special occasion.
Thank you.
