Prime Minister, Leader of the National Party representing Leader of the Opposition, Mr President, Mr Speaker, Ministers, Senators, Members of the House of Reps, Ladies and Gentlemen, may I offer you the warmest of welcomes to Government House on the eve of a new Parliamentary Session.

I am especially delighted that we gather on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne.

I want to acknowledge the traditional keepers of this beautiful place, and pay my respect to Elders of the Ngunnawal People.

My friends, I hope you are feeling refreshed, re-energised, after our summer break, ready for what I am sure will be a year that will test us, that will call on all our capacities.

As each year does.

It is a great honour for you to represent the Australian people.

You do so in electorates and States that differ widely: the broadest mix of demographics, industry, and environments.

Big cities, major regional centres, remote bush towns.

Citizens from across these diverse backgrounds share one very significant thing.

They place their trust in you as their elected representative.

They see our Parliament as an institution that signifies stability and order in this constantly changing world.

The cradle of our democracy, a place where all Australian voices can be heard; an institution where fine women and men aspire to advance Australia’s wellbeing.

Parliamentary life is not an easy road to take.

Long absences from home; often vast distances to cover; little time with loved ones.

Sometimes gruelling hours and late sittings.

I understand well the pressures that are placed on you in commuting regularly to Canberra.

For families it can be tough too.

We owe a debt of gratitude to husbands, wives, partners and kids for the support that they give to you.

My friends, I want you to know how much I admire your commitment to the service of our nation, our community, your dedication to the public ethos.

Our fellow Australians understand that Parliamentary life is demanding.

However, they expect integrity from all who serve in public office.

And as you begin the Parliamentary year they look to each of you to show respect for our national Parliament; the institution, its processes and, above all, respect for each other.

In the daily cut and thrust, this can get lost.

Ahead for you is a great deal of hard work, long days, strenuous times.

Issues that need careful attention, thinking through, judgement calls.

Friends, I wish you all the best as you strive to serve our Parliament and our people.

Thank you.
